Lizzie Brown grew up with adoptive parents and she never knew her real family. Thus she was very excited to learn that her grandmother found her and was about to pay her a visit. We all know the differences between expectations and reality: This time it turned out to be an extreme case. Her grandmother was a hardcore biker and a real witch to boot. The moment she showed up in Lizzie's apartment, the poor unsuspecting woman was able to understand what her dog says the guy is hilarious at times a Lizzie Brown grew up with adoptive parents and she never knew her real family.
The moment she showed up in Lizzie's apartment, the poor unsuspecting woman was able to understand what her dog says the guy is hilarious at times and an assassin demon made a guest appearance while trying to do his job, namely to kill the hostess. Needless to say, Lizzie's quiet and carefully planned life went straight to Hell - literally.
The character of Lizzie is the main reason the book worked. She possesses a healthy dose of irony and humor and her remarks and thoughts make me chuckled quite a few times. She also develops as a character and her development looks believable. There is a romance in the book, but to my complete surprise it never got in the way of the plot.
The Accidental Demon Slayer
There are also some very original ideas in the novel the likes of that I have not seen before. How is about a coven of witches which also happened to be a biker gang? How is about them using roadkills as their magic ingredients? I mentioned the dog. His speeches were quite amusing in the beginning, but by the middle of the book he kind of faded into background and even when he spoke it was nothing interesting. The writing style is rough at times. I found a couple of places where the flow of the story seems to break abruptly right in the middle of nowhere and picking up at a slightly different point - this is between paragraphs, not between chapters where is could work.
Repetitions: if I had one penny for every time Lizzie talks about feeling the skin warmth of her romantic interest, I would be able to retire right now with some money left for my heirs. In the conclusion I say the book was amusing and fairly good for a freebie. I admit that sometimes I gave 3 stars to much better books, but this one was good enough for me to give this rating. The dog is hilarious and the cover is kind of cute.
That's it. Now I'll try to explain why I didn't like or enjoy this book. I don't mind occasionally suspending reality. I do mind a total absence of reality, page after page after page. The entire story takes place in 3 or 4 days and in that time span, the heroine does a on every character trait and behavior. Uh, huh. The sex in this 'paranormal OK. The sex in this 'paranormal romance' consisted of one scene that didn't even register on the heat scale.
I truly couldn't follow their relationship because it was so chaotically written I was actually surprised that they even HAD sex. And the supporting cast Um, me neither. It sounds like it should be really funny View all 12 comments. A fun start to a 30th birthday to find out that your a demon slayer from a grandmother you never met and also that your dog is such a chatterbox. View all 3 comments. Nov 12, Bark rated it it was ok.
Lizzie, a young school teacher discovers she's from a line of witches and that she's the latest "demon slayer" and has a destiny she's never known about. One minutes she's teaching little kids, the next her little doggie is talking to her and she's plopped on a Harley with a grandma she's only known for minutes and is expected to slay demons with next to no training and, of course, there's a hunky guy thrown in to save the day.

This book started out cutesy enough but devolved into a crazy, unexplained mess. Grandma is dragged into the second layer of hell and Lizzie must rescue her. Don't ask me, I still can't make sense of it. And when the dog starts talking we are told by way of the dog as a way of explanation something along the lines of: "Oh he's been talking all along, Lizzie just now started listening.
There are many other issues such as this that make the book feel like it's mid series when in actuality it's the first in a new series. Not helping matters is the problem of Lizzie ineptness and dependence on others to bail her out, she's also boring and constantly bad mouths her adoptive parents for silly reasons that make her sound like a spoiled, ungrateful brat. It gets old fast and is so frustrating. This is not a book for those who like things to make sense but I guess it's a decent enough of a read if you don't think too hard on any of it.
I doubt I'll go out of my way to find the later books that complete the series. View 2 comments. I did not really enjoy the majority of this book, I found it all a bit scattered, disjointed, unbelievable and at times even down right silly.

I realize the story is a fantasy, so it is allowed to be rather farcical but there were times when I actually shook my head, put the book down and considered not continuing at all. Lizzie is not even an interesting or funny character instead I just found her very annoying. The dog was however funny and I liked him, he was probably the only plus in the ent I did not really enjoy the majority of this book, I found it all a bit scattered, disjointed, unbelievable and at times even down right silly.

The Accidental Demon Slayer started off rocky for me, but I can handle not getting connected with a story right away so I pressed on. I've been at this book for nearly a month off and on and I just can't seem to make a connection. Now, not a complete disconnect. There is really only one glaring issue for me. I can't stand the heroine.

The clueless stubbornness that caused fumbling and bumbling around was probably supposed to be cute and maybe I was supposed to admire her independent spirit that never seemed to listen to anybody, but I found it grating. For a gal who can read one- or many times two- books a day, taking a month and only getting to that point should tell you something.
Not the book for me, apparently. I know it is a favorite of others so I'm pretty sure its just me and Urban Fantasy or Paranormal Mystery fans should check it out for themselves.

Things that appeared out of nowhere: a griffin, demons, pixies, oh, and a lake. No to mention a long-lost grandmother and her band of biker witches. So if quirky is your thing, then you might like this book a whole lot better than I did. Don't get me wrong, I like quirky. But I felt that was the only thing recommending it against the disjointed mess I otherwise found.
Drama ensued, but mostly because the author contrived circumstances to ratchet it up. Oct 02, Lydia rated it it was amazing. Ok, this is one of the few cases in which you're standing in the middle of the road, trying to decide whether to go left or right. Ladies and gentlemen, let's see our choices! On the left, we have the too-used scenario of a girly girl, destined to be this awesome, kickass heroine who fights against all evil creatures and gets to sleep with the hottest hunk in the book.
